Running School Launches Year Seven With Exciting New Format!
We are pleased to serve around 5,000 kids at our new and returning partner schools. After careful analysis of the components of the program that are the most fun and motivating for kids, we have redesigned our program for the new school year.
Kids first complete a long-distance obstacle course for a period of 20 minutes at their own pace. Instead of the timed competition of past years, we turn the kids loose to encounter assorted agility challenges along a half-mile route: zig-zag lanes, "big air" jumps, over/under bars, tunnel crawls, bunny hops, balance beams, hurdles, jump rope stations, and assorted playground challenges integrating the school's permanent equipment.
The final 10 minutes of the session are devoted to sprint relay races, where teams assemble across 8 lanes for a furious series of down and back 40-yard dashes, tagging off to teammates heading in the opposite direction. This exciting, high-energy format puts further emphasis on fun and classmate camaraderie. One teacher at our longtime partner Jacks Valley Elementary School in Minden, NV exclaimed, "I've never seen my kids run so fast; the screaming classmates really get them going!"
While the timed long distance events of past years were valuable, we noticed that the kids who were already motivated and fit engaged the most, while kids at the back of the pack could easily become discouraged or disinterested. The grand challenge of getting kids moving must be based in fun, creativity, and internal motivation in a pressure-free environment. So far at each campus, the kids, teachers, administrators and coaches have all given a rousing thumbs up to the new format. We return with a great group of enthusiastic young coaches, led by popular local youth basketball coach/trainer David Garcia and ultramarathon runner Connor Curley.
We Really Need Your Help in 2012-2013!!
With charitable grant funding down in recent economic times, we struggle to maintain a healthy financial operation. A contribution to Running School goes 100% to getting kids moving--compensating coaches or paying for basic supplies and operations. We have no office costs, fundraising expenses, or other indirect overhead. Please consider even a modest donation. Click below to contribute via PayPal.
